Five DIY Tips Trick and Tips for Air Duct Sealing

The air ducts prove to be the best medium for the distribution of healthy air throughout the home environment. Sometimes over usage, the air ducts develop pores, leaks or even poor connections. What does this lead to? The ducts lose as much as 20-30 percent of the air in the process, thus deteriorating the air quality in turn. But, not to worry!

The following DIY tricks and tips can help with air duct sealing and thus ensuring an efficient working of the entire system.

    1. Duct Branch Lines

Talking metaphorically, you can compare an air duct system to a tree. Where the main trunk denotes the body of the air duct system, the branches denote the other protruding parts of the system. These so-called “duct branches,” are made up of fiberglass or metal and spread off to the specific rooms and areas it intends to cover.

If any of the branches develop a leak, a duct tape that is HVAC certified can be applied to repair the damage. In case, it fails to work; you can attach an imitating duct branch with the help of screws.

    2. The Main Lines

The main trunk of the air duct system happens to be the main line that is basically constructed out of fiberglass or metal. It is rare for an air duct main line to develop a leak, but if it does, repair can take place. In minor leaks, one can apply duct tape or caulk to repair the existing problem. But, if a problem seems to be going out of hands, never hesitate to call for expert advice.

An air duct sealing expert would clone the affected area and reapply it on the main line with the help of a duct tape that would, in turn, hold it together for normal functioning.

    3. Repairing the Boots And Its Connections

Metal hardware called boot resides inside the vent that blows off air inside a particular area of your home. This boot further connects to the duct line that transmits the healthy air throughout the duct’s passage. For a fact, the boots are likely to get damaged over time as they might develop air leaking spots. Whether it caulk, epoxy, or the patches; it is easy to repair the boots as a replacement is not a feasible option.

Make sure to notice the area where boots connect to the main duct line. If the leak appears to exist, detach and reconnect the connection. If the zip-ties connect the flex-line to the boot, you need to keep on trying attaching and detaching trick with the new zip-ties.
